Trouble is sprawled across the top of a chest of drawers, reading a book which they set down when Tess appears.

"You've been in the wars, haven't you."

Tess smiles a little wryly. She decides she likes this one.

“No war, just a warning shot,” she replies, smoothly. “Figured I wouldn’t trouble the infirmary twice in one month.”

[oohforeshadowing]

"They'd be fretting terribly about you if they knew," Trouble concedes, body unfolding as they slide down to ground level. "Anyone I should be taking pains to avoid?"

Tess nods. Probably, but this one’s below their pay grade.

“He won’t trouble you,” she replies, smoothly. “I don’t think you’d like his wardrobe though.”

"That's statistically likely," they drawl, and go rummaging for a sewing kit. "I'm sure I strike you as someone who stays out of trouble, anyway."

“Never seen someone more committed to the straight and narrow,” Tess agrees, but she’s teasing.

Trouble smiles, showing that every tooth is canine-sharp. They like her too.

"Am I not very committed to my work? Here." They hold out a small case of needles and threads. "Try to return them more or less as you found them."

Tess takes the case with a grin and pockets it.

“I’ll make every effort. Thanks, DT.”

[oohforeshadowing]

"DT," they echo, seeming to mull it over, then nods approval. "Pleasure doing business with you, Tess sweetheart."

"Any time."

It's been a long time since she was a sweetheart, but she doesn't fuss over it. She just gives a jaunty little salute and heads off.
